Reynoldsburg is a city in Fairfield, Franklin, and Licking counties in the U.S. state of Ohio. It is a suburban community in the Columbus, Ohio metropolitan area. The population was 41,076 at the 2020 census, making it the 30th-most populous city in Ohio. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.24 square miles. Located approximately 12 miles east of downtown Columbus, Reynoldsburg’s proximity to the urban core fosters its suburban character.

Reynoldsburg was first settled in 1802 by James and Margaret Crawford. It was originally called Frenchtown when it was platted in 1831, named after its surveyor, John French. The present name is for John C. Reynolds, a local merchant. A post office called Reynoldsburgh was established in 1833, and the name was changed to Reynoldsburg in 1893. The construction of Interstate 70 in the 1960s enhanced connectivity to Columbus. By 1960, Reynoldsburg was granted city status under Ohio law, enabling more robust municipal governance to manage the influx of residents and infrastructure needs.

Reynoldsburg is known as “The Birthplace of the Tomato,” claiming the first commercial variety of tomato was bred there in the 19th century. Local favorite son Alexander W. Livingston developed the “Paragon Tomato,” billed as the first tomato ever bred for commercial use. His legacy lives on in the Livingston House and Museum on Graham Road, which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Homes. The Tomato Festival has been held every year since 1965 and is now one of the region’s most beloved annual traditions, drawing visitors for tomato contests, live entertainment, food competitions, and family activities.

The largest racial/ethnic groups in Reynoldsburg are White (50.2%), followed by Black (30.3%) and Hispanic (6.9%). The median household income in Reynoldsburg is $71,381 and the median age is 38 years. In Reynoldsburg, 62.7% of housing units are occupied by their owners.

Reynoldsburg is governed under a mayor–city council form of government. Since being elected in 2019, Mayor Joe Begeny has assembled a team focused on economic development with a focus on career-based jobs, improving amenities for residents, updating infrastructure, and growing the city’s park system. As a former teacher in Columbus City Schools, Human Resources Supervisor at UPS, and former President of the Reynoldsburg City School District Board of Education, Mayor Joe Begeny represents Reynoldsburg in the Ohio Mayor’s Alliance.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture, the Ohio Fire Academy, and the Office of the Ohio State Fire Marshal are located in Reynoldsburg. The presence of these state agencies makes Reynoldsburg a significant hub for Ohio’s agricultural and public safety administration.

The City Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for 275 acres of parkland including nine major parks. Established in 1948, the first Franklin County Metro Park opened in Reynoldsburg — Blacklick Woods — a 643-acre park with a golf course, multi-purpose trails, one of the oldest Beech-maple forests in central Ohio, a winter sledding hill, a Nature Center, and the Walter A. Tucker State Nature Preserve.

The majority of Reynoldsburg is in the Reynoldsburg City Schools district, which currently has seven elementary schools, two junior high schools, and one high school with two campuses. The high school and junior high schools’ mascot is Rocky Raider and its colors are purple and gold.

Notable people from Reynoldsburg include Calvin Booth, former professional basketball player who currently serves as the general manager of the Denver Nuggets; Mike Matheny, MLB catcher and manager who grew up in Reynoldsburg; and rapper Bow Wow, who attended Hannah J. Ashton Middle School.
