Grove City

Grove City is a city in Franklin County, Ohio, United States. Founded in 1852, it is a suburb of Columbus. The population was 41,252 at the 2020 census. Grove City is a premier central Ohio community located in southwestern Franklin County. As a suburb of Ohio’s capital city of Columbus, residents and businesses enjoy an exceptional quality of life — all of the conveniences of metropolitan living coupled with the comforts of a unique, small hometown feel. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.36 square miles.

Until the mid-19th century, the area that is now Grove City was a wilderness filled with oak, beech, maple, walnut, dogwood and other trees. The area’s first European settler, Hugh Grant, operated a gristmill in Pittsburgh and transported excess goods down the Ohio River for sale, returning to Pittsburgh on foot. On one of these trips, he passed through the Scioto Valley region and in 1803 purchased the land that would become Grove City. Grove City’s official founder, William F. Breck, bought 15.25 acres of the farm owned by Hugh Grant Jr., then added 300 more acres intended for farming. Breck’s original plan changed when he realized the potential for growth since Harrisburg Turnpike passed through the area to the state capital, Columbus. Grove City was incorporated as a village in March 1866, and a local doctor named Joseph Bulen was elected as the first mayor. On November 16, 1959, Grove City was reincorporated as a city.

The population reached 41,252 by the 2020 decennial census, marking a 16.0% increase from 2010. Recent estimates indicate continued expansion, with the population at 43,144 as of July 1, 2024. The largest racial/ethnic groups in Grove City are White (86.0%), followed by Two or More (4.1%) and Hispanic (3.8%). The median household income in Grove City is $93,161 with a poverty rate of 6.39%. The median age is 41.1 years.

Grove City is operated based on a city charter that was originally written in 1958 and later amended in 1982. The charter gives the city’s power to an elected Mayor, an elected City Council, and an appointed Administrator. The current mayor of Grove City is Richard L. (Ike) Stage. In November 2023, Richard L. “Ike” Stage was elected to the position of Mayor for a fifth consecutive term. Stage also served as Mayor from April 1988 through December 1995 and served as the appointed City Administrator of Grove City from January 2000 through November 2003.

Grove City is home to more than 1,000 businesses that collectively employ over 33,000 people, contributing significantly to the local economy through diverse sectors such as retail, logistics, healthcare, education, and manufacturing. Prominent employers include UPS, Walmart, FedEx, Target, and The Home Depot, which operate distribution centers, stores, and facilities in the area, leveraging the city’s strategic location near major highways. Mount Carmel Grove City and OhioHealth Grove City Methodist Hospital serve as the city’s primary healthcare institutions, together employing thousands of workers.

Grove City sponsors or hosts several events throughout the year, including its annual Wine & Arts Festival, Bourbon & Spirits Festival, and Christmas Tree Lighting and Parade. The Grove City Chamber of Commerce hosts the Arts in the Alley Festival and Parade annually. Grove City is the only three-time winner of Ohio Magazine’s Best Hometown award.

The majority of Grove City is served by the South-Western City Schools district. The South-Western City Schools district employs over 3,500 staff members across its schools and administrative roles to serve more than 20,000 students.

Notable people from Grove City include Richard Cordray, raised in Grove City, who served as the first director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau from 2012 to 2017 and as Ohio Attorney General from 2009 to 2011. Other notable residents include Mike Mayers, Major League Baseball pitcher.
