Melrose Park

Melrose Park is a village in Leyden and Proviso Townships, Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is a suburb of Chicago. As of the 2020 census it had a population of 24,796. According to the 2021 census gazetteer files, Melrose Park has a total area of 4.35 square miles, all land. The village is centrally located in Cook County and is 25 minutes or less from O’Hare Field, Midway Airport, and downtown Chicago. The I-94 Tollway forms its western border, while the I-88 Tollway and the Eisenhower Expressway are only minutes away.

According to the Encyclopedia of Chicago, in 1882 residents of a then-unincorporated portion of Proviso Township voted to establish their own municipality — called simply “Melrose” until 11 years later, in 1893, when the “Park” was added and population in the area began to steadily increase. The first Italian-Americans arrived in 1888. These developments attracted sequential immigration waves, beginning with German and Lithuanian settlers in the late 19th century who engaged in farming and early commerce. Italians soon dominated, forming ethnic enclaves and cultural anchors like the annual Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, initiated in 1894. By the late 20th century, Hispanic immigrants, primarily from Mexico, supplanted earlier groups amid ongoing manufacturing demand, reaching 54% of the population by the 2000 census.

At the turn of the 20th century, the population surge plateaued and industry began to stagnate; it was only after World War I that the local economy was able to recover, the result of some manufacturing companies setting up shop in the village. New industry, coupled with Melrose Park’s prime geographic location next to the Proviso freight yards, led to a steady increase in the number of area jobs. This continued after World War II, with still more companies moving to Melrose Park. Zenith Electronics, Alberto-Culver, Jewel, and International Harvester (now Navistar) are some examples.

As of the 2020 census there were 24,796 people, 7,861 households, and 5,450 families residing in the village. The population density was 5,696.30 inhabitants per square mile. The largest racial/ethnic groups are Hispanic (77.8%), followed by White (16.8%) and Black (3.7%). The median income for a household in the village was $53,596, and the median income for a family was $58,589. The per capita income for the village was $21,881.

Melrose Park is governed by a mayor and a six-member Board of Trustees. Ronald M. Serpico has served as President (Mayor) of the Village of Melrose Park since May 1, 1997. During his tenure as mayor, Serpico has instituted programs that decreased crime, increased property values, and improved the schools as well as the overall economy. He was responsible for the Melrose Park Water Project, a $40 million water transmission system involving local, state, and federal agencies as well as private industry.

Melrose Park is one of the few villages to have two respected hospitals, Gottlieb and Westlake, located within its village limits. The village is also home to Stern Pinball, Inc., the world’s last manufacturer of coin-operated pinball machines.

The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel has been celebrated every July for over 100 years and is the longest running festival in the Chicago area. The annual Hispanofest draws nearly 125,000 people. Every Labor Day weekend the Taste of Melrose Park draws hundreds of thousands of visitors and has been ranked by the Illinois Festival Association as the second best food festival in all of Illinois.

The suburb was the home of Kiddieland Amusement Park from 1929 until 2010. It closed in September 2009 before it was demolished in 2010, and the sign of Kiddieland was relocated to the Melrose Park Public Library; a Costco warehouse store now stands in its place. There is a Metra railroad station in Melrose Park with daily service to Chicago.

Notable people from Melrose Park include Joseph Aiuppa, Chicago mob boss notable for Las Vegas casino skimming; Nicholas John Bua (1925–2009), district judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois; Clara Cannucciari (1915–2013), host of the web series Great Depression Cooking with Clara; and Dennis Grimaldi, actor, dancer, director, and Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning theatre producer.
