Stockbridge

Stockbridge is located in Henry County, Georgia, United States. The population was 28,973 at the 2020 U.S. census. Stockbridge is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and has grown into a suburban community with strong connections to the greater Atlanta region.

Stockbridge was first settled in 1829 with the establishment of Concord Methodist Church near present-day Old Stagecoach Road. The city received its post office in 1847 and was named after Levi Stockbridge, a traveling professor known in the area, though some sources attribute the name to Thomas Stocks, a former state surveyor and Georgia State Senate president.

The development of Stockbridge accelerated in 1881 when the railroad expanded through the area. Due to high land prices in Old Stockbridge, new development shifted slightly south where land was more affordable, leading to the construction of a depot and the growth of the community. Stockbridge was incorporated as a town in 1895 and later as a city in 1920. Today, it continues to grow while preserving historic sites such as the Aaron and Margaret Parker Jr. House and the Walden-Turner House.
