Conyers

Conyers is located in Rockdale County, Georgia, United States, and serves as the county seat. Conyers is approximately 24 miles east of downtown Atlanta and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The population was 17,305 at the 2020 U.S. census. The formerly separate town of Milstead is now part of Conyers.

Conyers was first settled between 1816 and 1821, with blacksmith John Holcomb establishing the earliest residence in the area. The development of Conyers was closely tied to the expansion of the railroad, which was intended to connect Augusta to what is now Atlanta. Dr. W. D. Conyers, a banker from Covington, played a key role in the city’s founding by purchasing land from Holcomb and selling it to the Georgia Railroad. The area became a watering stop along the railroad line and was eventually named after Dr. Conyers. By 1854, Conyers had grown into a small community and was officially incorporated.

Over time, Conyers experienced periods of rapid growth and transformation. In 1870, the surrounding area became Rockdale County, with Conyers designated as the county seat. During its early years, the town developed a reputation for both lively entertainment and commerce, with numerous businesses, schools, and institutions established. Today, Conyers maintains its historical roots while continuing to grow as part of the greater Atlanta region.
